Redox, electrolysis, fuel cells

Redox reactions are those where one substance is oxidised as another is reduced. In electrolysis, the separation of the electrodes means that it is possible to study the two reactions separately. This provides a way of introducing half equations, which show one half of the reaction (either oxidation or reduction) happening at a time and include electrons.

Additional topics in Edexcel include the purification of copper (Edexcel C3.4).

Additional ideas in OCR Gateway include inter-conversion of pairs of ions such as Fe2+ and Fe3+, rusting and rust protection, copper plating, predicting products from molten electrolytes and fuel cells.

Specification links: Edexcel 360 C3.4, OCR Gateway C5 and C6.

Note that in some specifications the same ideas appear in the Core or Additional Science units rather than in the chemistry extension units.

If you cannot find what you want in the listed resources, enter keywords from your specification in the Search box on the right. Reduce the number of ‘hits’ by using inverted commas to search for phrases.
