Products and green chemistry

The resources on this page relate to how the chemical industry makes new products and how manufacturing processes can be made more sustainable by the use of green chemistry.

In trying to make a chemical product in a ‘greener’ or more sustainable way, understanding reversible reactions, catalysis and equilibrium are important. (OCR Gateway C5, OCR 21C C7.5, WJEC C3.2). Ethanol can be made by three different methods and students need to be able to evaluate these. (OCR 21C C7.5).

Limestone is an important raw material used in iron and steel production, cement and many other processes. There can be issues surrounding its extraction from the ground. (WJEC C3.4).

Invented in the early 19th century and still used today, the Contact process for the manufacture of sulphuric acid involves carefully controlled conditions to ensure the maximum yield of product (Edexcel C3.4, OCR Gateway C5, WJEC C3.2).

Specification links: Edexcel 360 C3.4, OCR Gateway C5, OCR 21st Century Science C7.5, WJEC C3.2 and 3.4.
