Periodic table, reactions of elements
The periodic table is a very powerful tool for understanding the behaviour of elements and their compounds and for predicting the behaviour of new elements. The study of why the periodic table originated and how it came to be accepted by chemists provides an opportunity to teach about How Science Works.
The chemistry of groups 1 and 7 allows students to see trends in the reaction of elements. Physical properties and chemistry of the transition metals may also be studied.
Understanding how the patterns in reactivity relate to the structure of the atoms, including their electronic structure, helps to show the real power of the periodic table as a tool.

Note that in some specifications the same ideas appear in the Core or Additional Science units rather than in the chemistry extension units.
If you cannot find what you want in the listed resources, enter keywords from your specification in the Search box on the right. Reduce the number of ‘hits’ by using inverted commas to search for phrases.
