Identification and analysis

How can we know what is present in an unmarked sample when several very different substances can look very similar? Many students are intrigued by forensic science, but analysis is important to chemists too; if a new substance is made, it is essential to be able to show what it is. The resources on this page offer a brief introduction to chemical analysis, which also forms part of forensic science.

Flame tests and test tube tests for various ions and gases are enjoyable practical activities for students. (AQA C13.5, Edexcel C3.3, OCR Gateway C5, WJEC C3.5).

Some boards require students to know about chromatography (OCR 21C C7.4, WJEC C3.5) or instrumental methods of analysis (AQA C13.5).

Students may be expected to understand standard procedures in collection, storage and preparation of samples to ensure the reliability of results (OCR 21C C7.4).
