Chemical reactions can give out or take in heat and it is interesting for students to begin to understand why this is. As fuels become scarce, it is particularly important to be able to calculate how much energy would be expected from different reactions.
Energy level diagrams are a clear, visual way of presenting this information and the use of bond energies is one way of calculating the energy change in a reaction. Using a calorimeter is a practical way of finding out how much energy is produced when different substances are burnt and this can be related to energy values of foods and the need to avoid obesity. A solution calorimeter can find the energy change of a reaction in solution.
