Disease, immunity, antibiotics
This page contains resources that will allow teachers to explore disorders such as malaria, sickle-cell anaemia, kwashiorkor and Parkinson's disease. Web-based materials can be used to encourage independent learning or, when using an interactive whiteboard, with a whole class.
In addition to describing the symptoms of the disorders, the resources illustrate pathogens, genetic make-up and poor nutrition as possible causes of ill health. The immune system, vaccination and medicines as mechanisms for fighting infection are explained. Issues such as the over-prescription of antibiotics and how this can lead to the development of resistance in bacteria can be examined further.
