Triple Science Networks

Triple Science Networks

Collaboration between schools is potentially a fruitful way of overcoming the shortage of specialist teachers – particularly in physics and chemistry. As Triple Science GCSEs become more popular, collaboration between institutions will become more of a necessity to overcome the shortage.

The 50 networks funded by the Triple Science Support Programme give organizations or existing networks the opportunity to progress existing work or develop new projects to support the implementation and delivery of Triple Science in schools. Membership of a network enables practitioners to access a wealth of knowledge, materials, training, support and advice.

In 2010-11 the Triple Science support programme are funding:

10 Triple Science GCSE ‘Partnership Delivery’ Networks

The partnerships will focus on two specific issues:

  • Issues of timetabling and curriculum capacity

How to ensure that the Triple Science GCSE ‘entitlement’ and the Pupil/Parent guarantee can be offered in areas with low numbers of Triple Science GCSE students per school and limited resources.

  • Shortage of subject specialist expertise

For members of some partnerships there is a shortage of expertise, particularly in physics, or a lack of professional confidence in some aspects of practical experimentation and investigative work.

40 ‘Sharing Innovation’ Networks

We will encourage these networks to focus more closely on sharing innovation in:

  •   Teaching and Learning;
  •   Raising Attainment;
  •   E-learning; and
  •   Progression:  to Triple Science GCSEs from Key stage 3 and from Triple Science GCSEs to A-level

The TS networks provide a forum for the dissemination of good practice – both locally and nationally. Network members are able to exchange ideas and share practice with other teachers via the Triple Science community.

TS case studies from 2008/09 series of TS networks

The 2008/9 networks have produced a large range of resources, schemes of work, lesson plans and other CPD activities, all available for download from LSN Triple Science community. The case studies highlight the wide range of models of successful TS networks providing an insight into membership, aims, outcomes and benefits of the network.
