e-Learning Chemistry Unit 8

Activity 1: Searching the internet effectively

In this first activity you will learn how to search for information effectively. The internet contains a lot of information, and finding exactly what you want can sometimes be time-consuming. Use Google as a search engine to look for information about animations on electrochemistry on the internet. These may be used later for Activity 3.

The topic of electrochemistry can be divided up into:

  • electrolysis – key words: electrolysis of water; electrolysis of copper (II) sulfate; extraction of metals to include aluminium; purification of copper
  • electrochemical cells – key words: Daniell Cell; batteries
  • fuel cells – key word: fuel cells.

Type the key words and the file extension swf into the search as shown in Figure 1. SWF stands for ShockWave Flash file, which is the file extension for most animation files. Leave a space or a colon between the search word and the file extension.

When you press the Google search button, you will get links to websites that have animations (see Figure 2). It is important to make a note of these sites or save to your favorites any that you may wish to use later in activity 3.
